WHO WE ARE

God's divine plan calls us to connect with fellow believers, fostering fellowship, growth, encouragement, and joy. It is through these connections that we find opportunities to serve others, extend compassion to the world, and delve into the wisdom of God's Word.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

THE LEGACY OF ZION, 1892-PRESENT

Zion Church of Kurten traces its roots back to 1892, when it was founded by resilient German immigrants and organized under the guidance of Reverend Paul Vollbrecht as the Evangelical and Reform Church. The early congregation convened in humble homes and later at Fickey Schoolhouse until the gracious hospitality of Zion Lutheran Church allowed them to hold their worship services. It was during these formative years that a new chapter was born.

PIONEERS OF FAITH

Seeking to craft a space of their own, the pioneers of faith embarked on a mission to construct a sacred haven. This modest place of worship, located three-fourths of a mile south of our present-day site, was built using raw lumber sourced directly from the sawmill, with a cost totaling $225. The value of this structure extended beyond mere dollars; it represented the dedication of German immigrants, many of whom were not only striving to establish themselves as Americans but also fulfilling their obligations for passage to the New World.

However, historical records at the Brazos County Courthouse restricted worship services at the current site exclusively to Zion Lutheran Church. Undaunted by the obstacles, Zion Evangelical deemed it necessary to secure its own land in 1902.

A TESTAMENT TO DEVOTION

Three acres were acquired from Dr. Bart Barlow, marking the birthplace of our current location. The original church, a testament to their unwavering devotion, was transported to this new site through a rudimentary "winching" process, akin to grinding sorghum for syrup. In 1920, it was lovingly remodeled, but the passage of time necessitated its eventual removal. In its place now stands our cherished chapel, first dedicated in November 1942, and subsequently remodeled and updated in 1957, 1972, and 2017.

As God continued to bless our congregation and our numbers swelled, we embraced a new milestone in our spiritual journey. Our growth and God's grace led to the construction of a new sanctuary, a symbol of our devotion, and was joyously dedicated in October 2004.

OUR FAITHFUL JOURNEY

Throughout the years, Zion Church has remained steadfastly committed to aligning our beliefs with the teachings of the Bible, and nothing more, nothing less. We've embarked on a path that sets us apart from those denominations and associations that sometimes prioritize cultural trends over the timeless wisdom of Scripture. Today, you will discover Zion Church as a resolute, Bible-based, evangelical, and missional community, committed to shining a beacon of hope within our community.

Our association with the Evangelical Synod of North America led to a change in our congregation's name, from Zion Evangelical Church to Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1934. This merged entity later evolved into the United Church of Christ in 1957.

In the same era when our family center was expanded to offer more fellowship space and a place for Christian education, we embarked on a path of introspection and renewal. After forty-two years of association, it became clear that our values, rooted in conservative, Bible-based principles, no longer aligned with the UCC. A thorough exploration led us to the Evangelical Free Church of America, an association where our convictions resonated deeply. In 2007, we voted to affiliate with the EFCA, officially becoming part of that community in 2008.

The journey to establish an elder-led church began in 2016. By November of that year, when the deacons were selected, it was evident that we no longer required an affiliation with the EFCA. With the support of our congregation and adherence to the legal requisites of the state, we formally concluded our association with the EFCA in late 2017. January 2018 marked the completion of our transition into a Bible-based church, guided by the foundational principles set forth in Paul's letter to Timothy: "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."
